When we first visited this restaurant it was to enjoy a fantastic Sunday Roast and it was during that visit that we decided we must return to try the Tasting Menu . So on a delightful bank holiday saturday we headed back to St Albans . Our arrival this time our welcome was equally as friendly as the first with the added extra of them remembering us from our first visit. We were then seated in the dining area at the front of the restaurant. They also have two other areas one at the rear and the other situated upstairs. We then looked at the menu and headed straight to the Tasting Menu which looked very appealing so the choice was easy. After some delightful homemade bread and Amuse Bouche to was time for the first course a Ballotine of Loch Duart Salmon with fennel & horseradish which was devine. This was followed by a stunning Birds Liver & Madeira Parfait accompanied with rhubarb , yoghurt , pistachio & a slice of Brioche Bread.

BIRDS LIVER & MADEIRA PARFAIT

Our next course was definitely one of the highlights a amazing Poached Cornish Brill with leeks , cauliflower & grape and if that wasn’t delicious enough the dish came with an Crisp Oyster Beignet

POACHED CORNISH BRILL

OYSTER BEIGNET

This led us onto a choice of main course and both looked very appealing so with that we decided to have one of each. The first being a fantastic Dedham Beef Sirloin with new season Morels and the other a Yoghurt & Mint Roast Lamb Loin with a broccoli purée & also a anchovy & black olive crumble. It was quite simple to say that both dishes were as equally stunning especially when you have a side of heavenly Duck Fat Roast Potatoes

Before our desserts it was time for a cheese course which was a fine selection of British & French Cheeses accompanied with some delightful crackers , apple chutney , grapes & a celery sorbet

Now it was time for dessert firstly a delicious pre dessert of Lime Curd , Blood Orange & Meringue before an absolute heavenly way to finish with a truly amazing Bitter Chocolate Marquise with Salt Caramel , Whiskey Cream & Malt Ice Cream without doubt a dessert to remember for a long time

LIME CURD , BLOOD ORANGE & MERINGUE

BITTER CHOCOLATE MARQUISE

With coffee & petit fours to finish a delightful lunch had come to an end but not before going into the kitchen to see the team and have a chat to Owner Phil Thompson. Having now visited for two different kinds of dining experiences I can only recommend a visit to this restaurant even more highly than after my first visit as the food is fantastic and the service is so friendly

PETIT FOURS

This was a real Sunday Lunch treat thanks to the amazing food and excellent service. We first visited Blacklock back in January after hearing so many good things about the place and our experience then was fantastic. While chatting to the manager having said how much we enjoyed everything it was put to us that we must come for a Sunday Lunch. So with that in mind we looked for a space in the calendar and she very kindly booked us in. This took us to yesterday as the day chosen. Our arrival was once again given a friendly welcome and even nicer the fact they remembered us. On looking around the roast dinners looked amazing but we had to be patient. You can choose one of the roasts either Beef , Lamb or Pork but we liked the majority plumped for the All In Sunday Roast which is a mixture of all three meats. We started first though with the two dishes for the table the Pigs Head on Toast & Coal Roasted Scallops with Black Pudding and both were absolutely delicious.

PIGS HEAD ON TOAST

COAL ROASTED SCALLOPS with BLACK PUDDING

Now it was time for the main event the All In roast and oh my god it’s stunning. The vegetables & roast potatoes are on the bottom then two of the biggest Yorkshire Puddings sit on top before the beef , lamb & pork is draped over the puddings. We also decided to order two of the sides the Roots & Gremolata as well as the Minted Peas & Horeradish only because we wanted to try as much as we could. Everything is cooked to perfection so succulent & tender just heaven on a plate

While enjoying a little rest before dessert I spotted this drinks trolley in the corner which had to decanters on it so when I asked our waiter what they were he said one was a whisky cocktail and the other was the Spring Negroni to which he made us one each and very nice it was to.

SPRING NEGRONI COCKTAIL

It was then time for dessert to which they only do one but it is fantastic a homemade White Chocolate Cheesecake with Summer Fruits a dessert lovers dream

WHITE CHOCOLATE CHEESECAKE

So there you have it a truly amazing Sunday Lunch comes to an end and who knows when I’ll be back. I know one thing it won’t be long as the food is fantastic matched equally by the friendliness of each member of staff. Therefore please take my advice if your in London and think where can I get a great Sunday Roast then head to Blacklock for a lunch you won’t forget. But please make sure you book as it’s very busy on a Sunday

Until next time Thank You All at Blacklock for an amazing Sunday Lunch

Having visited twice before for brunch we were very keen to return and try the Al a Carte Menu so last night that’s exactly what we did. The evening got of to a great start as we were there before 7pm so got to have two delightful cocktails for the price of one . We then moved in to the restaurant with a nice greeting from the very friendly staff. Looking at the menu our choice wasn’t going to be easy as there were many delicious dishes to choose from and to make it harder you get told about the special.

Starters

We decided on the Truffle Burrata , Isle of Wight Asparagus , Quinoa & Summer Truffles and the Scarlet Tiger Prawns Arancini with Tomato , Habanero Chilli & Lime. Both dishes were amazing and a nice Italian white wine to match which was perfectly chosen by the sommelier

TRUFFLE BURRATA & ISLE OF WIGHT ASPARAGUS

TIGER PRAWN ARANCINI

Pasta

Following on from our starters we then decided to have a pasta course and this dish was heaven on a plate in fact stunning it was the evenings special a Crab & Tomato Linguine

CRAB & TOMATO LINGUINE

Secondi

Now it was time for the main courses and in keeping with the fantastic dishes that we’d already enjoyed we were eagerly awaiting what was to come and we needn’t have worried as they were both amazing. From the Clay Oven we chose the Wild Halibut , Roman Artichokes , spinach & anchovy aioli and from the Josper the Miso Iberico Pork Neck Nduja with fermented kohl rabi & padron accompanied by excellent side dishes of Burnt Greens with Chilli & Garlic plus some Rosemary Al Forno Potatoes. These dishes were once again matched beautifully with a glass of Italian Red & White wines

WILD HALIBUT & ROMAN ARTICHOKES

Cheese & Desserts

As we were in the mood to try as much as possible it was only right to have a cheese course so we shared a nice selection of 5 Italian cheeses before enjoying some delightful Italian ice cream & sorbets CHEESE , ICE CREAM & SORBETS

Coffee & Petit Fours

A great way to finish was to sample the delights of Italian coffee and fabulous petit fours

Summary

This brought an end to a truly amazing Italian feast where I would like to personally thank the chefs & staff as the food and service was excellent so I would definitely recommend a visit whether it’s for breakfast , brunch or an Al a Carte evening you will not be disappointed

This place certainly was worth the short trip to Upminster on bank holiday monday. Although it’s been open a while monday this was the first chance we had to visit and I can say now this will not be our last. This Italian restaurant is not a chain which to me is a plus and therefore menu is not just pizza and pasta. This to me makes you feel like your in a Italian restaurant. There’s plenty of room in the restaurant and all the seats are nice and comfortable. The staff were very friendly and you could already see from the other diners who came in that they’d built us a good reputation. While we looked at the menu we decided to have a nice cocktail and of course if your in a Italian it has to be an Aperol Spritz . We decided to start with the Osteria sharing plate consisting of Crab Arancini , Calamari , Beef Fillet Carpaccio with Proscuitto & Mozzarella Bruschetta and it was delicious

OSTERIA PIATTO For 2

We then moved on to our main courses where we had the Mare Pizza full of Tiger Prawns , Crab Meat & Mussels while I went for the slow roasted Porchetta stuffed & marinated with herbs & spices , Sicilian roast potatoes & green beans simply Italy on a plate

MARE PIZZA

PORCHETTA

It was then time for dessert and there was something I just had to try Italian doughnuts with cinnamon and a sweet musto cotto reduction & a chocolate sauce. We also had the delightful and refreshing Italian Sorbet

ITALIAN DOUGHNUTS

ITALIAN SORBET

Well that finished our meal perfectly and after a nice Espresso it was time to head home.

This is a place I would definitely recommend as the food is good and the service is very friendly. I for one will certainly be back so Ciao for now 🇮🇹

This was certainly a great month with a visit to more new places at home and on holiday plus a milestone lunch at my favourite restaurant . It all started with a first visit to the Marksman Pub on Easter Sunday for a fantastic lunch where the food was excellent and the service was as friendly as you’d expect to receive from a local pub

THE MARKSMAN PUB

The following week saw us enjoy a great lunch at my favourite place Haywards Restaurant and once more amazing food & service. Then on the sunday a fantastic Greek Feast at Suvlaki in Shoreditch the food was amazing and very much authenticly greek as were the wines & beer. This was my first time at Suvlaki and won’t be my last.

HAYWARDS

SUVLAKI

It was then time for a holiday so off to Fuerteventura we went and my great foodie month continued. Although enjoying delicious food at our hotel the H10 Ocean Suites we had to venture out to try a couple of the fantastic tavernas in Corralejo. The first of these was La Playitas Bar where we enjoyed some heavenly Spanish tapas. The second provided us with more excellent local produce and the freshest fish at Bar La Lonja situated right on the harbour

It was then time to return home to finish the month with a historic 100th visit to my favourite restaurant Haywards and just like our previous visits the food & service was excellent

This is the sister restaurant to Suvlaki in Soho which I’d heard very good things about so when I looked on the website to find that they also had a restaurant in Shoreditch I couldn’t wait to visit. This restaurant is set at the end of the very bustling Brick Lane which is a great location. On entering you immediately smell the wonderful aromas of the food. We were greeted by Giulia who was an absolute delight and looked after us so well throughout our lunch. She showed us to our table which was the Naughty Corner a great little alcove set out for Two people. We looked at the menu which is Greek Tapas and just wanted to try as many dishes as we could although the advice we were given was between 3 & 5 plates per person depending on how hungry you are. After consulting with Giulia we chose a good variety of dishes . We started with a selection from the Small Plates section which were a Mediterranean Baked Feta , Courgette Fritters & the Olive & Citrus Wood Smoked Eel. All three dishes were amazing as was the Greek Salad side dish and the Pita Bread with Tzatziki.

We then moved on to the Suvlaki section where we had the Corn Fed Chicken & the Mount Olympus Wild Boar skewers both delicious. You could also have these as mini wraps or even a regular wrap but as we were sharing it was easier to have the skewers

CORN FED CHICKEN SKEWERS

MOUNT OLYMPUS WILD BOAR SKEWERS

The next section of the menu is the Signature dishes and these are a must especially the Spicy Lamb Chops which were stunning so a big thanks to Giulia for the recommendation. I also had to to have the Octopus which is a big favourite of mine and I would feel like I missed out if I didn’t try it and I’m so glad I did it was simply delicious

SPICY LAMB CHOPS

OCTOPUS

Now it was time for dessert of which you only have three to choose from but the ones we chose were delightful. The Chocolate Biscuit Cake and the Orange & Almond Cake paired with a shot of Mastiha a fabulous Greek Liqueur

CHOCOLATE BISCUIT CAKE

ORANGE & ALMOND CAKE

This ended our time in the Naughty Corner and what was also an excellent lunch where the food and service was amazing. I would highly recommend this place as it’s everything you would expect from a small and friendly Greek restaurant and I for one hope to return soon. A final thanks to Giulia plus compliments to the chef 🇬🇷

This was certainly another great Foodie month for me with visits to a few of my favourites for a different type of occasion and a great new place for a Sunday lunch to where I’m looking forward to returning soon. I started with a visit to The Hoop where I’d previously enjoyed a fabulous Sunday Lunch but this visit was for a Chefs Tasting Menu and along with a guest wine producer made for a really great evening as the wine complimented the fantastic food. This was followed with a first visit to Thompson Dining in St Albans where we had the most amazing Sunday Lunch in fact it was a roast dinner to die for and definitely looking forward to returning very soon for a Tasting Menu

THE HOOP

THOMPSON’S ST ALBANS

The following week it was another memorable visit to Core by Clare Smyth where the food , wine & service was once again outstanding and without any doubt will surely rise all the way to the top. In my mind it’s a must visit . Then it was a visit to my favourite place Haywards for a fantastic Tasting Menu evening a restaurant that is definitely going from strength to strength and one my county of Essex should be very proud of.

HAYWARDS

On the Sunday it was off to The Rabbits Pub for lunch and with great food & friendly service made for a great afternoon. The following Saturday took us back to Haywards but this time for a Cooking Demo which is always a good and interesting experience when you see the amount of work that goes into creating a dish.
